In 1792, the El Castillo de Monterey was established to protect the port and persido of Monterey. The fort was constructed to protect the Monterey port and the Presidio of Monterey from invaders. [2] The site was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 23, 1971.
Monterey became the capital of the Province of Californias in 1777 and the chapel was renamed the Royal Presidio Chapel. The original 1770-71 church along with other buildings in the presido were destroyed by fire caused by a salute gun in 1789 and was replaced by the present sandstone structure built between 1791 and 1795. [ 6 ]

It is the only existing presidio chapel in California and the only surviving building from the original Monterey Presidio. [22] Monterey served as the capital of Alta California from 1770 until 1849, [23] hosting its only official port-of-entry and the provincial legislature.
