The Remington Model 700 comprises a series of bolt-action (later semi-automatic 74* series) centerfire rifles manufactured by Remington Arms since 1962. It is a development of the Remington 721 and 722 series of rifles, which were introduced in 1948.
For example, factory and aftermarket receivers using the Remington 700 footprint are produced with various types of action threads, all with a 26.99 mm (1 + 1 ⁄ 16 in) diameter, but with a pitch of either a 1.588 mm (16 TPI, Remington standard), 1.411 mm (18 TPI) or 1.270 mm (20 TPI, Savage standard).
Two custom gunmakers, Shilen Rifle Company and Wichita Engineering, made rifles specifically for the cartridge. [7] The cartridge's 50-grain .22-caliber bullets have a muzzle speed upward of 4,300 ft/s (4,250 according to some [ 8 ] ), and the cartridge is known for its long-range accuracy and velocity. [ 2 ]
The primary difference between the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps rifles is that while the U.S. Marine Corps M40 variants use the short-action version of the Remington 700/40x (which is designed for shorter cartridges such as the .308 Winchester/7.62×51 mm NATO), the U.S. Army M24 uses the Remington 700 Long Action. Sights: supplied with adjustable rear sights, hooded ramp foresight, drilled and tapped for scope mounts (Weaver mounts for Remington Model 700 fit the CF-2) The rifle was finished in blued steel barrel and action with gloss black paint on the alloy floorplate and trigger guard, the stocks were of wood.
Both rifles are produced in several variants, such as single or double trigger, upgraded wood, finish, etc. Various barrel lengths and shapes (round, octagonal, half-round, etc.). Rifles chambered in "standard" factory rounds are warranted for shooting factory smokeless powder ammunition as well, such as the 30-40K, .38-55, and .45-70. [4]

[7] [8] Many .17 Remington shooters have reported optimum accuracy when the bore is cleaned after every 10 - 20 shots, [7] [8] [9] though more modern metallurgy used in both barrels and bullets has largely mitigated the fouling issue.
