Aquifers of the United States Withdrawal rates from the Ogallala Aquifer.. This is a list of some aquifers in the United States.. Map of major US aquifers by rock type. An aquifer is a geologic formation, a group of formations, or a part of a formation that contains sufficient saturated permeable material to yield significant quantities of water to groundwater wells and springs.
The Ogallala Aquifer (oh-gə-LAH-lə) is a shallow water table aquifer surrounded by sand, silt, clay, and gravel located beneath the Great Plains in the United States. As one of the world's largest aquifers, it underlies an area of approximately 174,000 sq mi (450,000 km 2) in portions of eight states (South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas). [1]
Edwards and Trinity Aquifers map. The Edwards Aquifer is one of the most prolific artesian aquifers in the world. [2] Located on the eastern edge of the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas, it is the source of drinking water for two million people, and is the primary water supply for agriculture and industry in the aquifer's region.
California aquifers, excerpted from map in Ground Water Atlas of the United States (USGS, 2000): Lavender is "other" for "rocks that generally yield less than 10 gal/min to wells"; dark green-blue (3) are the California coastal basin aquifers, bright-turquoise blue (7) is the Central Valley aquifer system, flat cobalt-blue (1) down south is Basin and Range aquifers
The Ogallala Aquifer of the central United States is one of the world's great aquifers, but in places it is being rapidly depleted by growing municipal use, and continuing agricultural use. This huge aquifer, which underlies portions of eight states, contains primarily fossil water from the time of the last glaciation. Annual recharge, in the ...
The Jordan Aquifer is the largest source of groundwater, extending from northeast Iowa to south central Iowa, and is ultimately the source of much of Iowa's agricultural and industrial water. In addition to pollution threats, the aquifer is threatened by overuse in well-source irrigation, ethanol production, and the diminishment of resupply ...
This is a map of aquifers in St. Joseph County as of 1994. The Kankakee Aquifer is the yellowish patch to the west. The light blue area is the St. Joseph Aquifer System, which serves much of the ...
The aquifer system is on the Columbia Plateau, contained within the Cascades, Rocky Mountains, Okanogan Highlands, and the Blue Mountains. [1] These aquifers are bounded on the bottom by a layer of Miocene basaltic rock that can be up to 15,000 ft thick. [2] The primary aquifers in the system are shallow, and unconfined. [3]
