St. Mary's on the Flats, originally known as the Church of Our Lady of the Lake, [1]: 34–35 [2]: 8 was the first Catholic church building in Cleveland, Ohio.The location where the church once stood can be found, in an 1881 atlas, [3] at the south-east corner of Columbus Ave. and then Girard Ave. on the east bank of the Cuyahoga river in the flats.

He selected architect Patrick Keely, who designed the building in an ornamental gothic style, and the bishop laid the cornerstone on October 22, 1848. However, the United States Army Corps of Engineers recommended abandoning the current channel (known as the "south channel") and opening up a new Saint Clair Flats channel. This new channel was opened in 1870, after which the older channel became less important, but still used. [2]
