India's top gas importer Petronet LNG hopes to extend its long-term deal to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar to beyond 2028, the company's head of finance V.K. Mishra said on Monday.
The deal was initially expected to be finalized by 31 March 2020, [7] but the non-binding agreement was instead terminated in November 2020 due to low LNG prices adversely affecting the investment case. [8] On 6 February 2024, Petronet LNG signed a supply deal with QatarEnergy for 7.5 million metric tons a year of LNG from 2028 to 2048.
So far, two vessels carrying LNG had berthed at the terminal and had unloaded them. [1] [4] [5] Petronet LNG gets the supply of 14.4 lakh tons of LNG per year for the Kochi terminal from the Gorgon project in Australia for a 20-year period as per the deal signed in August 2009. [5] [6]
The agreement with Petronet LNG is for the supply of approximately 1.5 Mtpa of LNG over a 20-year term while the agreement with PetroChina is for the supply of approximately 2.25 Mtpa over a 20-year term. Together, these two sales and purchase agreements commit the ExxonMobil subsidiary's share of LNG from the 15 Mtpa Gorgon LNG Project.
