The Saab 9-3 (pronounced nine-three) is a compact executive car initially developed and manufactured by the Swedish automaker Saab.. The first generation 9-3 (1998–2003) is based on the GM2900 platform, changing to the GM Epsilon platform with the introduction of the second-generation car (2003–2012).
The 9000 was launched to the motoring press at a conference at Kolmården Game Park on 24 May 1984 [13] and 1985 in the European market. This original model called "Saab 9000 Turbo 16" was a five-door hatchback, only available with a manual gearbox and the 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 16 valves, already known from the 900.
Saab 900. Combi coupé is a marketing term used by Saab to describe cars with a sloping coupé-like rear hatchback. [1] [2] The term joins the European term "combi" (for an estate car / station wagon) with coupé. [3] The design combines the functionality of a hatchback with the appearance of a fastback (as in liftback).
GM also delayed the 9-3 wagon by three years, shelved a hatchback derivative of the 9-3 sedan, stalled plans for all-wheel-drive capabilities in Saab models until 2008, cancelled a 9–5 replacement in 2005, and announced a planned shift of production away from Saab's historic home in Trollhättan to Opel's factory in Rüsselsheim.
The architecture was a multi-division project of GM North America, Opel and Saab, [2] and debuted in the 2002 Opel Vectra and 2003 Saab 9-3. Since this platform falls squarely in the center of the worldwide automobile market, GM plans to produce a great many Epsilon vehicles with over a dozen variations.
