Aurora, also known as Sleeping Beauty or Briar Rose, [1] [2] [3] is a fictional character who appears in Walt Disney Productions' animated film Sleeping Beauty (1959). Voiced by Mary Costa , Aurora is the only child of King Stefan and Queen Leah.
[1] In Maleficent, where he is portrayed by Brenton Thwaites, he meets Aurora after his father, King John of Ulstead, sends him to King Stefan's castle on a business matter, and they fall in love. In Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, he is instead portrayed by Harris Dickinson, as Thwaites was unable to reprise the role due to scheduling conflicts. [2]
The character was animated by Marc Davis, who also animated Aurora in the film. She was aptly named "Maleficent" (an adjective derived from the Latin maleficentia, which means "doing evil or harm"), [7] and may have been based on earlier French and European myths and legends about the fairy Mélusine, especially in the 2014 live-action film of the same name. Maleficent is a live-action adaptation/retelling of 1959's animated film Sleeping Beauty, from the eponymous antagonist. [1] In 2003, [2] during Don Hahn's meeting with Disney's animation department, it was suggested to create an origin film about Maleficent from Disney's animated film Sleeping Beauty in the same vein as then just released Broadway musical Wicked.
