In the following example from Dutch, the verb is unergative, describing a voluntary action, and can be made passive: Er wordt hier veel geskied. "A lot of skiing is done here." (lit. "it is skied much here") But a sentence with an unaccusative verb, such as "The concert lasted a long time", cannot be made passive.
When it's used unnecessarily, it bloats a sentence. You can reword these sentences to use active voice: "The thief is chased by a cop." → "A cop chases the thief." Sometimes long sentences are written in passive voice so that the writer can string along several clauses: "The bank is robbed by a thief who is later revealed to be an employee."
