The union high school district serves over 42,000 high school-aged students and over 32,000 adult learners. The Chula Vista Star-News reported 15 students had registered within the first half hour the dean of admission's office was open, with Oliver Pittenger, a graduate of the nearby Chula Vista High School being the first person to enroll.

Chula Vista first opened in the summer of 1947, operating out of a temporary campus in Brown Field Municipal Airport with an estimated student enrollment of 650. [2] By 1949, the student body had grown to just over 900 students between grades 10, 11, and 12; a new school at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and K Street was under construction. [3]
