The South Ethiopia Regional State (Amharic: ደቡብ ኢትዮጵያ ክልላዊ መንግስት) is a region in southern Ethiopia. [4] It was formed from the southern part of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR) on 19 August 2023 after a successful referendum.

The regions of Ethiopia are administratively divided into 62 zones (Amharic: ዞን, zonə), (Oromo: Godina). [1] The exact number of zones is unclear, as the names and number of zones given in documents by Ethiopia's Central Statistical Agency differ between 2005 [1] and 2007. [2] Various maps give different zone names and boundaries.
The Sidama Region was created in June 2020. [5] The South West Ethiopia Region was created on 23 November 2021 following a successful referendum earlier that year. The new region was split off from the SNNPR and consisted of Keffa, Sheka, Bench Sheko, Dawro, and West Omo Zones, along with Konta special district. [6]

Map of the regions and zones of Ethiopia. Ari is an administrative zone in South Ethiopia Regional State. Until August 2023, Ari was a part of the South Omo Zone. [2] It is named for the Aari people, whose homeland is in the zone. Ari is bordered on the south by South Omo Zone, on the Northeast by the Gofa Zone and North by the Basketo Zone.
The 1995 Constitution of Ethiopia established the regions based on ethno-linguistic territories. [1] [4] Previously, this level was called a province, and though many of the old province and new region names are the same, the entities are not identical and the words region and province are not interchangeable. As of 2023, there were twelve regions.
The region dissolved when Sidama Region, Southwest Ethiopia Region, South Ethiopia Regional State and Central Ethiopia Regional State emerged independently. In June 2020, following the formation of the Sidama Region the region's capital Hawassa is located outside of the boundaries of the region.
