Prepositions in the Spanish language, like those in other languages, are a set of connecting words (such as con, de or para) that serve to indicate a relationship between a content word (noun, verb, or adjective) and a following noun phrase (or noun, or pronoun), which is known as the object of the preposition.
Recently, two new prepositions have been added: durante and mediante, usually placed at the end to preserve the list (which is usually learnt by heart by Spanish students). This list includes two archaic prepositions ( so and cabe ), but leaves out two new Latinisms ( vía and pro ) as well as a large number of very important compound prepositions.
Spanish is one well-known example of a clitic-doubling language, having clitic doubling for both direct and indirect objects. Because standard Spanish grammatical structure does not draw a clear distinction between an indirect object and a direct object referring to a person or another animate entity (see Spanish prepositions), it is common but not compulsory to use clitic doubling to clarify.
In many Iberian Romance languages, such as Spanish and Portuguese, the preposition con or com ' with ' has special forms incorporating certain pronouns (depending on the language). For example, in Spanish and Asturian conmigo means ' with me '. Historically, this developed from the Latin use of cum ' with ' after a pronoun, as in mecum ' with me '.
For example, a Briton with the name "Sarah Jane Smith" could become either "Sarah Jane Smith Smith" or "Sarah Jane Smith Jones" upon acquiring Spanish citizenship. Formally, Spanish naming customs would also mean that the forename "Sarah" and middle name "Jane" would be treated as a compound forename: "Sarah Jane".
