The Savanna and RX-3 production was phased out in 1978 to make room for the new Mazda RX-7. Of all the pre-RX-7 rotary vehicles Mazda built (930,000 in total), the RX-3 was by far the most popular. Having not used the RX-7 GTP again in either 1981 or 1982, Honegger rebuilt the car for the IMSA GTP category in 1981, and rechristened it as the Mazda GTP.
