An influential photographic work, Picture for Women is a response to Édouard Manet's Un bar aux Folies Bergère [1] and is a key photograph in the shift from small-scale black and white photographs to large-scale colour that took place in the 1980s in art photography and museum exhibitions.
The photograph was entirely created in a set and depicts a room with several damaged items, while the walls also show signs of destruction. The picture has the dimensions of 159 by 234 cm [clarification needed] and is exhibited in a lightbox. It is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, in Ottawa. [1]
When exhibited, the work includes two screen projections, photographs shown in LED-powered light boxes, a surround-soundscape and an immersive virtual reality installation—"The room deliberately evokes the oppressive environment inhabited by the women".
