"On Eagle's Wings" is a devotional hymn composed by Michael Joncas.Its words are based on Psalm 91, [1] Book of Exodus 19, and Matthew 13. [2] Joncas wrote the piece in either 1976 [3] or 1979, [1] [4] after he and his friend, Douglas Hall, returned from a meal to learn that Hall's father had died of a heart attack. [5]
[10] [11] The now-standard harmonisation was devised by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840 when he adopted the hymn, sung in the now-standard key of F major and with its original German lyrics, as the chorale to his Lobgesang or Hymn of Praise (also known as his Symphony No. 2). [citation needed]
The music was composed in 1869 by Charles Gounod, for the celebration on 11 April 1869 of Pope Pius IX's golden jubilee of priestly ordination. The purely instrumental piece in three parts, [ 3 ] originally called "Marche pontificale" ( French for "Pontifical March"), became extremely popular from its first performance.
