The women's lacrosse team formerly competed in the Southern Conference, until the MAC began sponsoring that sport in 2020. [3] The school colors are maroon and gold, and the school, and its students and alumni are referred to as Chippewas which is sometimes shortened to Chips .
The Mid-American Conference announced in late 2019 that women's lacrosse would be added as a sponsored sport for the 2021 season. At that time of the announcement, only two full members of the conference had women's lacrosse teams, with Central Michigan starting play in 2016 and Kent State in 2019.
Almost all Central Michigan teams compete in the Mid-American Conference; the one exception until recently was the women's lacrosse team, newly elevated from club to full varsity status for the 2015–2016 school year.
