Mount Maunganui, or Mauao, known to locals as The Mount, [3] is a 232 metre (760 foot) volcanic dome at the end of a peninsula in the Tauranga suburb of Mount Maunganui in New Zealand, beside the eastern entrance to the city's harbour. Local Māori consider Mauao to be tapu (sacred), and it plays an important role in their mythology.

On the Mount Maunganui side of the bridge is a causeway which carries Te Awanui Drive and houses the Tauranga Bridge Marina. At the other end of the causeway, two parallel bridges, collectively known as Aerodrome Bridge, cross a small channel of water, and connect the causeway to Mount Maunganui.

On the Mount Maunganui side of the harbour, the Port of Tauranga has 2,055m of linear (continuous) berth face. Immediately adjacent to the wharf are cargo sheds and a 20,000 tonne capacity coldstore. Spread along the wharf are 22 bunker points to allow ships to refuel while loading or unloading.
