Racecar roll cage inside a Suzuki Swift. A roll cage is a specially engineered and constructed frame built in (or sometimes around, in which case it is known as an exo cage) the passenger compartment of a vehicle to protect its occupants from being injured or killed in an accident, particularly in the event of a rollover.
To support the new body, a custom roll cage is provided with the exterior body kit for structural support and safety. [6] The Vaydor has a 52% front 48% rear weight distribution, [7] and weighs an average of 500-700 lbs less than the original donor car, increasing the power to weight ratio by 15-20%.
This cage is covered by a heavy-gauge sheet metal forming the skin of the vehicle. An internally mounted electrical extraction winch with a capacity of 5,000 kg (11,023 lb) can be mounted at the front of the vehicle if required, and the 2-piece windshield can be removed to provide greater visibility and protect from flying glass fragments.
In kit form, the builder buys the shell and roll cage from the manufacturer and must purchase a donor vehicle (usually from wrecking or scrapping motor vehicle yards). The donor vehicle is pulled down to a rolling chassis, and then the process of putting the kit together starts.
The MkII went through the most changes, receiving a shorter removable nose section, built-in roll cage on later models, longer side windows hinged from front bottom and top corners, and the addition of a Ford-based model. Ford versions have a bump on the bonnet to accommodate the engine and later version had smooth boot lids with the ribs removed.
Some tractor operators have raised concerns about using ROPS in low-clearance environments, such as in orchards and buildings. In response, NIOSH developed an Automatically Deploying Rollover Protective Structure (AutoROPS) which stays in a lowered position until a rollover condition is determined, at which time it deploys to a fully extended and locked position.
