Daito Bunka University cheer staff demonstrates that school spirit is an important aspect of the Hakone Ekiden. Twenty universities, which belong to The Inter-University Athletic Union of Kanto (関東学生陸上競技連盟, Kantō gakusei rikujō kyōgi renmei), can participate in this Ekiden.
Ekiden (駅伝) is a long-distance running multi-stage relay race, mostly held on roads. [1]: 812 [2]The original Japanese term had nothing to do with a sport or a competition, but it simply referred to the age old post-horse or stagecoach courier system which transmitted communication by stages, instead of one horse or a man covering the entire long distance.
On the first Sunday of November, the men compete in the 8 stage, 106.8 kilometer National Collegiate Ekiden Championship in Aichi and Mie Prefectures. [4] This race is the second of the season's big three, the first being the Izumo Ekiden and the last being the Hakone Ekiden. Here, 27 teams battle for the national title.
In the men's All-Japan Interprefectural Ekiden Championship, 7 runners run 48 kilometers in stages of 7k 3k 8.5k 5k 8.5k 3k and 13k. [10] In both races, each team is composed of runners selected to represent one prefecture, a total of 47 teams in each race. The majority of the team members are high school and junior high school elite runners.

Haiji is a 4th year Kansei University Student and a long time resident of Chikusei-so. He has dreams of running in the Hakone Ekiden with a team and slowly built up one of at-first unwilling acquaintances at the dorm. Despite recovering from a knee injury, Haiji remains one of the most enthusiastic residents and coach of the group.
The university is known for its sports program, which is renowned in rugby and distance running, with the Ekiden (駅伝, えきでん, relay road race) team coming fourth in the prestigious January 2009 New Year Hakone Ekiden. Daito Bunka focuses primarily on cultural arts and humanities.
Kanakuri is also known for his role in establishing the Hakone Ekiden relay marathon in 1920. [16] Since 2004, the top prize in the race has been named in his honor. He died at the age of 92 on 13 November 1983, at his hometown of Tamana in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. [17]
