GIS data acquisition includes several methods for gathering spatial data into a GIS database, which can be grouped into three categories: primary data capture, the direct measurement phenomena in the field (e.g., remote sensing, the global positioning system); secondary data capture, the extraction of information from existing sources that are ...
Raw data (sometimes colloquially called "sources" data or "eggy" data, the latter a reference to the data being "uncooked", that is, "unprocessed", like a raw egg) are the data input to processing. A distinction is made between data and information, to the effect that information is the end product of data processing. Raw data that has ...
Data can be represented visually or analysed in complex statistical models, to show the difference between certain areas, or to understand the association between different personal characteristics. Census data offer a unique insight into small areas and small demographic groups which sample data would be unable to capture with precision.
Data are commonly used in scientific research, economics, and virtually every other form of human organizational activity. Examples of data sets include price indices (such as the consumer price index), unemployment rates, literacy rates, and census data. In this context, data represent the raw facts and figures from which useful information ...
show the data; induce the viewer to think about the substance rather than about methodology, graphic design, the technology of graphic production, or something else; avoid distorting what the data has to say; present many numbers in a small space; make large data sets coherent; encourage the eye to compare different pieces of data
While the tools of data analysis work best on data from randomized studies, they are also applied to other kinds of data—like natural experiments and observational studies [19] —for which a statistician would use a modified, more structured estimation method (e.g., difference in differences estimation and instrumental variables, among many ...
