Tobermory (/ ˌ t oʊ b ər ˈ m ɔːr i /; Scottish Gaelic: Tobar Mhoire) [2] is the capital of, and until 1973 the only burgh on, the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Inner Hebrides. It is located on the east coast of Mishnish, the most northerly part of the island, near the northern entrance of the Sound of Mull.
The ship was built by Gourlay Brothers & Co. of Dundee as a passenger/cargo ship for Wm. H. Müller & Company's Batavier Line, and launched as Batavier IV in 1902. Of 1,568 gross register tons (GRT), and with a length of 260 ft (79 m), she was powered by a 3-cylinder triple expansion engine, producing 2,300 ihp (1,700 kW) to give a maximum speed of 14.5 knots (26.9 km/h; 16.7 mph).
An alongside berth was completed in 2000. In 2003, Tobermory would receive their latest lifeboat, a 17 m (56 ft) Severn-class lifeboat, 17-39 Elizabeth Fairlie Ramsey (ON 1270). [2] On 27 January 2013, the Tobermory lifeboat was called to the aid of a fishing boat with gearbox failure, located 7 miles (11 km) west of the Isle of Coll.
By some accounts, the Florencia (or Florida or San Francisco), a ship of the defeated Spanish Armada fleeing the English fleet in 1588, anchored in Tobermory to take on provisions. After a dispute over payment, the ship caught fire and the gunpowder magazine exploded, sinking the vessel. In her hold, reputedly, was £300,000 in gold bullion. [24]
The Water Line Series was created by the Shizuoka Plastic Model Manufacturers Association in May 1971. It is a collaborative effort by three manufacturers to produce constant scale models of most of the ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II, [5] in their first series, and then an ongoing collection of 1/700-scale kits of warships of the world. [6]
The ship is 111 m (364 ft 2 in) long with a 19 m (62 ft 4 in) beam and has capacity for 648 passengers and 143 vehicles, including room for large highway vehicles such as buses and transport trucks. Chi-Cheemaun was initially powered by two Ruston 3,500- horsepower (2,600 kW ) diesel engines and an 800 hp (600 kW) bow thruster engine for ...
From 1932 the summer-only ferry service between Tobermory and South Baymouth was assigned to the M.S. Normac, which sailed the route sturdily and steadfastly for the next 30 seasons. The owners of the S.S. Kagawong, Vittie and Harmer, defaulted on the mortgage held on the ship by its previous owner, and it was relinquished back to John Tackaberry.
