Bath College is a further education college in the centre of Bath, Somerset and in Westfield, Somerset, England. It was formed in April 2015 by the merger of City of Bath College and Norton Radstock College. [1] [2] The College also offers Higher Education courses and has its own Undergraduate building.
The school was founded as Bath School of Art in 1852 following The Great Exhibition of 1851. [1] The Bath Directory for 1856 shows its location at Weymouth House (roughly the rear of the present Marks and Spencers store) and its Master as Anthony Carey Stannus, an Irish painter noted for marine scenes and who later helped establish a society which evolved into the Royal Ulster Academy. [2]
In 1896 the Bath Municipal Technical College opened in a newly built north wing of the Guildhall, [9] offering evening classes in various newly formed Technical Schools. Among other schools of that era, the Bath School of Art at The Paragon and the Technical School at Green Park were moved into this new building.
It was a women's college offering two year courses, under the Principal Mary Dawson. The present institution was formed in 1975 as Bath College of Higher Education by the merger of Bath Teacher Training College and Bath College of Domestic Science. In 1983 Bath Academy of Art also merged into the college.
Bath is the present home of Norland College, a provider of childcare training and education.Courses range from a BTEC programme for 14- to 16-year-olds offered in conjunction with local schools, through post-school practical vocational courses, to degree courses in association with the University of Gloucestershire.
The Bath Academy of Media Makeup was founded by Melanie Crump in 2012. [5] [6] [7] In early 2013 the academy appointed Peter Swords King as its Artistic Director.The Bath Academy of Media Makeup was accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC) in March 2015 and accepts both UK and international students. The University of Bath can trace its roots to the Merchant Venturers' Technical College (whose alumni include the physicists Paul Dirac and Peter Higgs), an institution founded as a school in 1595 [6] and a technical school established in Bristol in 1856 which became part of the Society of Merchant Venturers in 1885.
