The Free Church of Scotland (Scottish Gaelic: An Eaglais Shaor; [4] Scots: Free Kirk o Scotland) is a conservative evangelical Calvinist denomination in Scotland.It is the continuation of the original Free Church of Scotland that remained outside the union with the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland in 1900, and remains a distinct Presbyterian denomination in Scotland.

Thus the congregation can claim to have been founded by St Columba, the Irish monk who first brought Christianity to Inverness. Among many notable features is a Father Willis organ, restored in 2010. The Old High Church is a category A listed building. St Stephen's was founded as a 'daughter church' of the Old High in 1897.
The church opened as a chapel of ease in 1798 but was rebuilt in 1852-1853. The street frontage was added in 1897-1898 by Ross & Macbeth. East Church left the Church of Scotland during the disruption of 1843 and became Inverness East Free Church.
