The structure was designed in the Brutalist architecture style and was built in 1977 to house federal offices. It has seven stories, and is part of a 454,000 sq ft (42,200 m 2 ) facility, including an eight-story parking garage.
The building was completed in 2004. The School of Architecture offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in the fields of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and City and Regional Planning. [2] Knowlton Hall serves as the replacement for Ives Hall, the previous home of the school of architecture which was demolished in July 2002. [4]
The Beacon Building was designed by Benham, Richards and Armstrong, a Columbus architecture firm. [1] It has six stories and 70,500 sq ft (6,550 m 2 ). [ 3 ] The building was a notable entry in a Columbus Landmarks -hosted mid-century modern architecture survey in 2011–12.
The firm was an early signatory of the Architecture 2030 challenge, a global initiative stating that all new buildings and major renovations reduce their fossil-fuel GHG-emitting consumption by 50 percent by 2010, incrementally increasing the reduction for new buildings to carbon neutral by 2030. [4]
Moody Nolan was founded by architect Curt Moody and engineer Howard E. Nolan in 1983 with the goal of developing a portfolio of private-sector projects, unlike other minority firms. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] As of June 2024, the firm has 12 office locations and 350 employees. [ 4 ]
Four buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Hale Hall (originally Enarson Hall), Hayes Hall, Ohio Stadium and Orton Hall.Unlike earlier public universities such as Ohio University and Miami University, whose campuses have a consistent architectural style, the Ohio State campus is a mix of traditional, modern and postmodern styles.
