The original YZ250 of 1974 used an air-cooled 250cc two-stroke engine of 70 mm bore and a 64 mm stroke, which was improved semi-annually. The air-cooled motor was replaced in 1982 with a 249 cc liquid-cooled two-stroke reed-valved engine with a mechanical, rather than servo-driven, YPVS exhaust valve for a wider spread of power.
For 2003, ATK continued to offer variations of the 50MX, as well as a two-stroke 125, the 250 and 260 Enduros, the four-stroke 605 and 500 Enduro, and a 600 Police Edition. The biggest news, however, was the release of the ATK 700, marketed as the Intimidator. [ 20 ]
Yamaha produced the enduro DT1 250 in 1968. The motorcycle was embraced and Yamaha learned that, in America riders were interested in motorcycles which could operate off-road, and on road. Yamaha experimented with larger displacement and in 1975 they created the DT400B. The DT400B did not initially sell well, and Yamaha reduced the price.

The CT series was replaced with the DT175 from 1974 onwards, it was a very popular bike for its modifications. The CT3 was the basis for the original Yamaha AG175 released in 1974, and many parts are interchangeable between the two (and earlier CT variants).
