Founded in the 1780s, the Enfield Shaker community remained active until 1917. The surviving buildings of their once large community complexes are located in and around Taylor Road in northeastern Enfield, and were listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The CDP is in the northern part of the town of Enfield, bordered to the west by Interstate 91, to the north, partially by Brainard Road, to the east by Connecticut Route 192 (North Maple Street), and to the south by Connecticut Route 220 (Elm Street/Shaker Road). Thompsonville borders Sherwood Manor to the west, across I-91.
The road continues north across the state line as Shaker Road towards the town center of Longmeadow. After 1.7 miles (2.7 km), Route 192 turns west onto Williams Street until it ends at an intersection with U.S. Route 5. Route 192 is a two-lane secondary road for its entire length. [1]
