The Huron–Manistee National Forests are two separate national forests, the Huron National Forest and the Manistee National Forest, combined in 1945 for administration purposes and which comprise 978,906 acres (3,960 km 2) [2] of public lands, including 5,786 acres (23 km 2) of wetlands, extending across the northern lower peninsula of Michigan.

The club began as a remote hunting and fishing club for outdoor enthusiasts. The original charter limited membership to 50 partners. [1] The property comprises 13 inland lakes and approximately 40,000 acres of old-growth forest.
About 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) north of Kersbrook is the 353-hectare (870-acre) Warren Conservation Park, a rugged nature reserve with views over the Warren Gorge which was dedicated in 1966 and protects a range of rare fauna. Along with being one of three lumber barons of Northern Michigan, Hanson owned the Michigan Sugar Company and the Bay City Sugar Company. In 1916, he donated 13,826 acres of cut-over land in Crawford County to the state of Michigan for use as a forest game preserve and military reservation. This land became the first state-owned game preserve.
