OpeniBoot is an open source implementation of Apple's closed source bootloader iBoot. It allows the booting of unsigned code on supported Apple Devices (such as Linux kernels). It also allows to download and install the Android operating system on iPhone , iPad and iPod Touch .
Note: The column MBR (Master Boot Record) refers to whether or not the boot loader can be stored in the first sector of a mass storage device. The column VBR (Volume Boot Record) refers to the ability of the boot loader to be stored in the first sector of any partition on a mass storage device.
In x86 computers, a first-stage bootloader is a compact 512-byte program that resides in the master boot record (MBR) and executes when a computer starts. Running in 16-bit real mode at address 0x7C00, it performs minimal hardware initialization, sets up a basic execution environment, and locates the second-stage bootloader.
When using iBoot's command prompt, the included commands are used to manage the behaviour, such as its boot arguments (internally called the "boot-args" in the NVRAM), or if the startup command (fsboot) should be used when iBoot is automatically loaded (known as auto-boot).
