The Market Place covers an area of 165 acres (670,000 m 2) [3] and has more than 120 stores, restaurants, cafes and theaters. The open-air Buenaventura Center was built between 1962 and 1965, with its first store, The Broadway, opening in September 1963. Inline stores, such as Barker Brothers Furniture, Kimo's Polynesian Shop, F.W. Woolworth and a Vons-Shopping Bag Supermarket, opened during 1964. J.C. Penney began business in November 1965.
The flagship location on San Francisco's Market Street was a destination shopping location for decades, and several branch stores operated in the various suburbs of the Bay Area. The Emporium and its sister department store chains were acquired by Federated Department Stores in 1995, and many converted to Macy's locations.
The first store was opened in 1919 [1] [6] [7] in Bakersfield, California. [4] In 1993, Heilig-Meyers bought 92 McMahan's stores for $65 million. [11] In 1996, Heilig-Meyers arranged to buy another 20 stores from McMahan's. [13] Whether the 1996 sale was completed is unknown. Of the stores remaining, three were closed in 2006. [9]
