With a 14–0 sweep giving them a bye up to the best-of-3 finals, La Salle won their first thirteen games; their last game was against arch rival Ateneo. The two teams were locked 43–all when Wesley Gonzales, Rich Alvarez, Larry Fonacier and Andrew Cruz engineered a 21–3 run to put Ateneo up 64–46 with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Eagles won the men's basketball title over La Salle in 1958, 1988, 2002, 2008, and 2017 whereas the Green Archers prevailed in 1939, 1974, 2001, and 2016. In women's basketball, both schools have only won titles in the UAAP as the NCAA does not have a women's basketball tournament, where La Salle leads Ateneo, 5–2.
La Salle's Mark Cardona scored 13 points to give the Green Archers a 41–34 lead early in the game. Early in the third quarter, La Salle scored eight unanswered baskets to give them a 15-point lead; later in the quarter, Ateneo's top scorer JC Intal, who was suffering from fever, fouled out with six points.
Hosted by De La Salle University, the Ateneo Blue Eagles defeated the De La Salle Green Archers in the finals defending their first UAAP men's basketball championship: it was the first UAAP finals series for the Ateneo–La Salle rivalry that originated in the NCAA (Philippines).
La Salle's go-to guy Joseph Yeo scored 23 of his 28 points in the second half to blow the game wide open; he led the 11–0 run at the third quarter to erase Ateneo's three-point halftime lead to a 43–31 La Salle lead.
