Soissons Cathedral (French: Cathédrale Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais) is a Gothic basilica church in Soissons, France. It is the seat of the Bishop of Soissons, Laon, and Saint-Quentin . The construction of the south transept was begun about 1177, and the lowest courses of the choir in 1182.
Today, Soissons is a commercial and manufacturing centre with the 12th century Soissons Cathedral, the ruins of St. Jean des Vignes Abbey and the crypt of the former abbey of Saint-Médard as three of its most important historical sites.

Nivelon was the son of Gérard II, lord of Muret and Quierzy, and Agnès de Longpont. [2] He became a canon in 1166 and the bishop of Soissons in 1176. [3] As bishop, Nivelon oversaw the construction of the new Gothic cathedral of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais.

The abbey was founded in 557 by Clotaire I on his manor of Crouy, near the villa of Syagrius, just outside the then boundaries of Soissons to house the remains of Saint Medard, [1] the legend being that during the funeral procession the bier came to a standstill at Crouy and was impossible to move until the king had made a gift of the whole estate for the foundation of the abbey.
