Etowah Indian Mounds are a 54-acre (220,000 m 2) archaeological site in Bartow County, Georgia, south of Cartersville.Built and occupied in three phases, from 1000–1550 CE, the prehistoric site is located on the north shore of the Etowah River.
Under government pressure in 1805, the Lower Creek ceded their lands east of the Ocmulgee River to the state of Georgia, but they refused to surrender the sacred mounds. They retained a 3-by-5-mile (4.8 km × 8.0 km) area on the east bank called the Ocmulgee Old Fields Reserve.
The Valley Towns were further south in this area, along the upper Hiwassee, Nantahala, and Valley rivers; all of these were located in what later became the province and state of North Carolina. [5] The people of this region became known as the Kituwah, also spelled Keetoowah, after the name of their mother town.

SR 127 goes southwest out of town with SR 49 but then leads west 21 miles (34 km) to Rupert , while to the east it leads 13 miles (21 km) to Perry .
