Merrill is a city in and the county seat of Lincoln County, Wisconsin, United States. It is located to the south of and adjacent to the Town of Merrill. The population was 9,347, according to the 2020 census. [3] Merrill is part of the United States Census Bureau's Merrill MSA, which includes all of Lincoln County.
The river is divided by a small island where West Main Street crosses into the uptown portion of the city of Merrill. The two highways separate at the Y-intersection of Grand Avenue and Main Street; WIS 64 continues east over the Prairie River into downtown Merrill, while WIS 107 turns sharply to the northwest along Grand Avenue.
The town of Merrill is in southern Lincoln County. U.S. Route 51 crosses the town from north to south. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 53.2 square miles (137.9 km 2), of which 51.7 square miles (133.9 km 2) are land and 1.5 square miles (4 km 2), or 2.88%, are water. US 51 was widened to a full freeway over a period of 25 years from Merrill to Portage. The freeway continues around Portage to the west as I-39 (originally as WIS 78 ) to connect with I-90 and I-94 while US 51 continues along surface roads into and through Portage.
