Carlisle is a town in Haddon Township, Sullivan County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. [4] The population was 692 at the 2010 census . It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area .

In 1815, Carlisle was founded. An act of the Indiana legislature dated December 30, 1816, created Sullivan County, with areas partitioned from Knox County. The effective date of the new government was January 15, 1817, with interim commissioners charged to begin organizing the new government in February.

The name Bendix Woods originates from the Bendix Corporation which donated the land to St. Joseph County for the creation of a park. The park's historical significance, however, dates to its establishment by the Studebaker Corporation, formerly of nearby South Bend, Indiana, as the first model test facility for an American automobile company.
