A pair of marines scan with M16A4 rifles in Fallujah, Iraq (December 2004); the one in the foreground has an ITL MARS attached via a MIL-STD-1913 "Picatinny rail". The ITL MARS (multi-purpose aiming reflex sight) is a gun sight that combines two sighting devices, a reflex sight and a laser sight, as well as a backup iron sight.
The current version of the sight is the PSO-1M2. This telescopic sight is different from the original PSO-1 only in that it lacks the now obsolete infrared detector, which was used to detect generation-zero active-infrared night vision devices like the US M2 Sniperscope. The metal body of the PSO-1 is made from a magnesium alloy.
The sight is designed for use with the M16/M4 family of rifles, but can be mounted on any weapon fitted with an upper Picatinny rail. It is also NVG-compatible—the aiming dot is still visible through night vision scopes and goggles. The Army's M68 designation was also applied to a later version of the sight, the Aimpoint CompM4.
Once established as United States Military Standard, its use expanded to also attaching other accessories, such as: iron sights, tactical lights, laser sights, night-vision devices, reflex sights, holographic sights, foregrips, bipods, slings and bayonets.
