Minas Morgul is the second full-length album by the Austrian black metal band Summoning.The band and many of their fans consider this album to be their debut album as it developed the "Summoning sound" and brought the band to a larger audience due to its lyrics involving J. R. R. Tolkien's themes.
When Harry Busse joined the band they renamed themselves to "Minas Morgul". In 1987 the band settled on Morgoth when singer and bass-player Marc Grewe joined the band. The name was derived from the epithet of the original dark lord Melkor in J.R.R Tolkien's Middle-earth Legendarium .
The band's debut album Lugburz was a traditional black metal album, with a raw, lo-fi production style. [14] On their following album Minas Morgul the band's sound changed significantly, and has been characterised as "a departure from straight black metal in favor of bold atmospheric experimentation which retains a definite blackened feel."
In 2001 Morgul entered the studio once again to record Sketch of Supposed Murderer. This would be Morgul's last album under the label Century Media. In April 2002 Jack D. Ripper entered Soundsuite Studio to record the entirety of vocals for Swiss band Meridian on their first album, The Seventh Sun.

Motörhead's guitarist Michael "Würzel" Burston leaves the band. Ingo Schwichtenberg of Helloween dies. Necrophagist's guitarist Jan-Paul Herm and drummer Raphael Kempermann leave the band. Kempermann is replaced by Daniel Silva.
