Upton Birnie Jr. was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania on 7 July 1877, a son of clothing store manager Upton Birnie and Susan (Galt) Birnie. [1] [2] His brother Samuel Galt Birnie (1875–1938) was a prominent attorney in Philadelphia. [2] [3] His uncle Rogers Birnie (1851–1939) was a career U.S. Army officer who retired as a colonel. [6] The 1897 Carlisle football team finished with a record of 6–4. [7] Archiquette remained with the Carlisle sports teams in 1898, helping the football team to another 6–4 record. [8] [9] He was a member of head coach Pop Warner's 9–2 football team in 1899 that was ranked among the top teams in the country.
Gobrecht was the head football coach at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and he held that position for 16 seasons, from 1965 until 1979 and then returning for the 1984 season. [5] His coaching record at Dickinson was 52–76–7.
