Leola is a small city in and the county seat of McPherson County, South Dakota, United States. It was founded on May 1, 1884, and named for Leola Haynes, [ 5 ] daughter of one of the town's founders. The population was 434 as of the 2020 census .
It includes schools run by the Bureau of Indian Education but otherwise does not include non-traditional schools and school systems. All school districts, that is, those organized under South Dakota law (excluding non-school district BIE schools), are individual governments.

The Samuel H. Ordway Jr., Memorial Prairie, a 7,800-acre (3,200 ha) grassland owned by The Nature Conservancy on the south side of South Dakota Highway 10 about 10 miles (16 km) west of Leola, is home to a bison herd. [8] [9]
Leola Elementary is in the midst of renovations and will move back into its newly renovated building in the 2026-27 school year. In addition, a brand new middle school, Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, was built and opened its doors for the 2022-23 school year. It now houses grades 6-8; the previous middle school was home to only grades 7-8.</ref>

The McPherson County Courthouse, located on South Dakota Highway 10 in Leola, South Dakota, was built in 1928. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. [1] It was designed by architects Buechner & Orth. [1] The courtroom is equipped with panic buttons. [2]
