Kyanite is a typically blue aluminosilicate mineral, found in aluminium-rich metamorphic pegmatites and sedimentary rock. It is the high pressure polymorph of andalusite and sillimanite, and the presence of kyanite in metamorphic rocks generally indicates metamorphism deep in the Earth's crust. Kyanite is also known as disthene or cyanite. [5]

Tanzanite is only found in Simanjiro District of Manyara Region in Tanzania, in a very small mining area approximately 7 km (4.3 mi) long and 2 km (1.2 mi) wide [4] near the Mererani Hills. [5] Tanzanite is noted for its remarkably strong trichroism, appearing alternately blue, violet and burgundy depending on crystal orientation. [6]

The sky-blue crystals are kyanite. Minor white quartz is present, presumably from the recrystallization of coesite. A few gold-white phengite patches can be seen at the top. A 23 millimetres (0.91 in) coin added for scale.
This northwest-southeast trending zone extends for about 700 km. The whiteschist is found with rocks bearing the assemblages anthophyllite–cordierite–kyanite and garnet–staurolite–kyanite. [7] Most occurrences were originally described from metasedimentary sequences, and thought to represent either evaporite or bentonite layers.
A new study has found that the Parthenon sculptures, previously thought to be white, were once painted with elaborate designs and patterns on their garments, using colors such as “Egyptian blue.”
The unusual blue coloration of the quartz is thought to be due to ilmenite inclusions. It is named after Llano County, Texas, the only place where it is found. [1] Location of Llano County. The geology of northeast Africa is very similar to that of Texas, and many of the two regions' minerals and fossils are only found in these two locations. [2]
