Lake Wakatipu comes from the original Māori name Whakatipu wai-māori. [1] With a length of 80 kilometres (50 mi), it is New Zealand's longest lake, and, at 289 km 2 (112 sq mi), its third largest. The lake is also very deep, its floor being below sea level (−110 metres), with a maximum depth of 420 metres (1,380 ft).

The river was first known by its Māori name of Te Awa Whakatipu, with te awa literally translating as 'the river'. [7] The name Whakatipu is shared with several nearby geographic features, including Lake Wakatipu [a] and Whakatipu Kā Tuka (the Hollyford River) though this name is an archaic term and its original meaning is no longer known. The Kawarau River is a river in the South Island of New Zealand. It drains Lake Wakatipu in northwestern Otago via the lake's Frankton Arm.The river flows generally eastwards for about 60 kilometres (37 mi) and passes through the steep Kawarau Gorge until it joins Lake Dunstan near Cromwell.
