West Islip is a hamlet and CDP settled in 1683, located in the Town of Islip, in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Situated on the South Shore of Long Island , the population of the CDP was 27,048 at the time of the 2020 census.
Secatogue’s principal villages were at West Islip (Secatogue,) Bay Shore (Penataquit,) and Oakdale (Connetquot.) On November 29, 1683, William Nicoll (Nicholls) founder of the Town of Islip, NY, a son of New York City Mayor Matthias Nicoll , was awarded the first ”Royal Patent” of the east end of what is now the Town of Islip.
Other parts of the CDP, as of the 2020 US Census, extend into Islip Union Free School District, Brentwood Union Free School District, and West Islip Union Free School District. [15] The shape of Bay Shore CDP differed in the 2010 and previous censuses, [16] and so that boundary did not extend into West Islip School District. [17]
