The first church in modern-day Ballyfermot existed in a former Dublin Corporation paint depot on O'Hogan Road which Father Donal O'Scannaill had purchased from Dublin Corporation c.1950 for £200. [2] This building had originally been a storage unit known as 'the painters hut' during the first housing phase of Ballyfermot.
He remained as a member of the order and of the Roman Catholic Church till 1969, when he joined the Anglican Church of Canada at St Matthew's Church in Ottawa in September 1969. On April 17, 1971, he married Marie Elizabeth Hamlin, a former nun of the Anglican Order of St Anne. Eventually they adopted and raised three children.
Arthur Mervyn Stockwood (27 May 1913 – 13 January 1995) was a Church of England bishop who served as vicar of St Matthew's Church, Moorfields, then of Great St Mary's, Cambridge, and finally as Bishop of Southwark, retiring in 1980.
Because the burial grounds at St. Matthew's, St. Patrick, and St. Peter churches were all full by that time, a number of graves were moved to the newly established Mount Olivet in order to make room at the old cemeteries for new burials. [9] Mount Auburn Cemetery, a rural cemetery near Boston, Massachusetts, was the model for Mount Olivet. [10]
The church was designed by Robert Layton who was an industrial arts teacher in Iowa Falls. He was born in England and when he visited his home country in 1912 he made sketches of several village churches. From these sketches he drew up the plans for St. Matthew's. [3] Louis and Ernie Welden, two of his students, assisted with making the blueprints.
