Since 12 June 2008, RTÉ News has been served by the RTÉ News channel, formerly RTÉ News Now. The channel airs commercial-free 24 hours a day with the latest live news. The station was initially made available on mobile phones and online at rte.ie/news. The channel broadcasts in the Irish, English and ISL languages.
The channels (with the exception of Virgin Media) are also available on digital terrestrial, cable and satellite services throughout Northern Ireland, although some programmes are "blacked out" due to rights issues, such as some sporting events, Sunday's Gaelic football games and Australian soap opera Home and Away.
An internal review within RTÉ also determined if the stations closure was imminent. With early morning news bulletins discontinued on RTE 1, the only morning news coverage on RTE Television is now provided on RTE News Now with the live simulcast of RTE Radio 1's Morning Ireland web-stream and short news updates at 10.00 am and 11.00am. Analogue terrestrial used UHF 625 lines, in common with the rest of the UK, although transmission ceased in October 2012, as part of the UK Digital Switchover.

As part of the Belfast Agreement the Republic of Ireland 's Irish language television station TG4 has begun transmitting from a limited number of locations in Northern Ireland.
