A transient ischemic attack (TIA), commonly known as a mini-stroke, is a temporary (transient) stroke with noticeable symptoms that end within 24 hours. A TIA causes the same symptoms associated with a stroke, such as weakness or numbness on one side of the body, sudden dimming or loss of vision, difficulty speaking or understanding language or slurred speech.
A TIA may cause sudden dimming or loss of vision, aphasia, slurred speech, and mental confusion. The symptoms of a TIA typically resolve within 24 hours, unlike a stroke. Brain injury may still occur in a TIA lasting only a few minutes. Having a TIA is a risk factor for eventually having a stroke. [10] [11]
Dementia may occur when neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular pathologies are mixed, as in susceptible elderly people (75 years and older). [2] [5] Cognitive decline can be traced back to occurrence of successive strokes. [4] ICD-11 lists vascular dementia as dementia due to cerebrovascular disease. [1]
The 62-year-old Scottish singer shared she experienced a mini stroke last April and feared she wouldn't perform again.
[2] [3] Signs and symptoms often appear soon after the stroke has occurred. [3] If symptoms last less than 24 hours, the stroke is a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also called a mini-stroke. [3] Hemorrhagic stroke may also be associated with a severe headache. [3] The symptoms of stroke can be permanent. [5]
Although confusion is sometimes reported, others consider this an imprecise observation, [7] but an elevated emotional state (compared to patients experiencing transient ischemic attack, or TIA) is common. [8] In a large survey, 11% of individuals in a TGA state were described as exhibiting "emotionalism" and 14% "fear of dying". [9]
Symptoms of cerebral infarction can help determine which parts of the brain are affected. If the infarct is located in the primary motor cortex , contralateral hemiparesis is said to occur. With brainstem localization, brainstem syndromes are typical: Wallenberg's syndrome , Weber's syndrome , Millard–Gubler syndrome , Benedikt syndrome or ...
A silent stroke differs from a transient ischemic attack (TIA). In TIA, symptoms of stroke are exhibited which may last from a few minutes to 24 hours before resolving. A TIA is a risk factor for having a major stroke and subsequent silent strokes in the future. [8]
