U (streaming service) U (formerly known as UKTV Play) is a video on demand service owned by UKTV, which is operated by the BBC 's commercial subsidiary BBC Studios. The service launched on 4 August 2014 and offers catch-up programming and live broadcasts from UKTV's free-to-air channels (U&Dave, U&Drama, U&W and U&Yesterday).
UKTV started life as a single channel, UK Gold.The original partners behind the channel were the BBC's commercial arm BBC Enterprises and the outgoing ITV contractor Thames Television, although before the launch the American cable operator Cox Enterprises stepped in and took a majority share, 65 percent, in exchange for underwriting the costs of launching the channel.
U&Dave is a British free-to-air television channel that mainly broadcasts comedy-oriented factual programming. It is owned by UKTV, a subsidiary of BBC Studios.. Launched in October 1998 as UK Gold Classics, the channel would undergo various identity and formats changes before adopting the Dave branding on 15 October 2007.
