Searching for the grace inside a library, Metatron incapacitates Castiel with a spell and takes the demon tablet, what he had really come searching for. However, Castiel manages to recover his grace and is restored to full power though his wings are still broken. Sam and Castiel do not tell Dean that Metatron is on the loose with the tablet.
Tracing the victim back to his hometown, Sam and Castiel discover that the entire town is essentially stuck living in the fifties, with the accompanying fashions and moral attitudes, to the point that Sam falls under the influence and takes the dead man's place.
Castiel realizes this is an illusion created by Metatron. Metatron views the whole angel war as a story and wants Castiel to play the villain by leading angels against him. Metatron claims that Castiel will fail, but he will let him back into Heaven and give him a power supply for his new grace which will otherwise soon kill him.
Castiel gets his grace back and is restored to full power, but he and Sam are left worried by what Metatron can do with the demon tablet despite now being human. They also lie to Dean about how Castiel got his grace back, telling him that Hannah got it out of Metatron and not mentioning his escape.
When Castiel finds Metatron, he extracts Castiel's grace from him, telling him it is the final part of a spell that will achieve what Naomi described. He sends Castiel, now a human, back to Earth and completes the spell. Dean arrives just as Sam is about to complete the ritual, and begs him to stop warning it will kill him.
Castiel and Hannah continue their journey towards the bunker with Castiel growing weaker all the time. At a gas station, they are attacked by a vengeful Adina and a weakened Castiel is left near-death. Before Adina can kill the two angels, Crowley, having problems with ruling Hell due to his time with Dean, kills Adina and steals her grace ...
Once they reach the hospital, they find it covered by demons. Castiel kills the demons, and along the way, gains back his memories. Castiel transfers Sam's madness and experience in Hell to himself. Sam is released and Castiel stays in the hospital, plagued with the visions of Lucifer. Meg takes a job in the hospital to look after Castiel.
