Southern Pacific #9 is a 4-6-0 oil-fired narrow gauge steam locomotive, built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in November 1909. It was originally built for the Nevada–California–Oregon Railway and was sold to Southern Pacific in the late 1920s.
The Southern Pacific narrow-gauge system was a network of 3 ft (914 mm) narrow-gauge railroad lines operated by the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) in the western United States. It consisted of two lines acquired in the early 20th century, running from western Nevada into eastern California and southern Oregon.
No. 18 was originally built in 1911 for the Nevada–California–Oregon Railway (NCO) as No. 12 until it was sold to Southern Pacific (SP) in 1926. [1] It was renumbered to 18 and worked the rest of its career on SP's narrow-gauge lines along with sister locomotives Nos. 8 and 9, serving the desert areas of Nevada and California.

The Southern Pacific Transportation Company was acquired in 1996 by the Union Pacific Corporation and merged with their Union Pacific Railroad. The Southern Pacific legacy founded hospitals in San Francisco, Tucson, and Houston. In the 1970s, it also founded a telecommunications network with a state-of-the-art microwave and fiber optic backbone.

It was originally built for the Nevada–California–Oregon Railway as their second #8, and was sold to Southern Pacific in 1929. She spent the rest of its career hauling passengers and freight along Southern Pacific's Keeler Branch.
