[1] Surrounded by mountains, it lies 72 kilometers northwest of Gilgit, the capital of the Gilgit-Baltistan region. Pakistan's 1998 census recorded the population of Gahkuch as 10,142. [2]

Golaghmuli Valley is a big part of Tehsil Phander, which is a new Tehsil within the Ghizer District (now part of Gupis–Yasin District). It was previously a part of Tehsil Gupis. During the government of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), a decision was made to establish Golaghmuli as a new Tehsil.

This district was established in 2019 [2] by merging Gupis Tehsil and the Yasin Tehsil. These two western tehsils were originally part of the larger Ghizer District but were reorganized to create the Gupis-Yasin District as a separate administrative entity within Gilgit-Baltistan.
