It was on the west side of the Chippewa River, just north of the confluence with the Minnesota River. Daniel S. Wilkins was the first settler to arrive in 1865, and he laid out Chippewa City in autumn 1868. Wilkins's cabin there was the location of the first county commissioners' meeting.

The township was originally to be called Chippewa Township but later was renamed as that name was already taken for a township in Douglas County. The township was first settled along the timber districts along the Minnesota River. Later immigration filled in the prairies with farmsteads, with the first house being built on the prairie in 1869. The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad Depot is a former Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad (the Milwaukee Road) depot in Montevideo, Minnesota, United States. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The station was built in 1901 and is the only remaining building in Montevideo that was built by the railroad.
