Lansdowne is located next to the Massachusetts Turnpike in the Fenway–Kenmore neighborhood near Kenmore Square, below grade between Beacon Street and Brookline Avenue. The station, originally named after former Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey, opened as an infill station in 1988, for limited service to baseball games at Fenway Park.
The main station entrance is located just north of Bloor Street on Lansdowne Avenue, with a secondary unstaffed entrance on Emerson Avenue. Opened in 1966, the station lies approximately 561 metres (1,842 feet) from its nearest station to the west, Dundas West . [ 2 ]

The station was originally to have been located at the intersection of No. 3 Road and Alderbridge Way, and would have been known as "Alderbridge station". The name "Lansdowne" comes from the former use of the site for a horse-racing track, named Lansdowne Park, from the 1920s until the 1960s.
