Sussex National Bank of Seaford is a historic bank building located at Seaford, Sussex County, Delaware. It was built in 1887, and is a one-story, two-bay, rectangular brick structure with a low hipped roof. It features an elaborate brick cornice, showcase window, spires and gable, and brick work detail. [2]
A run on the bank occurred on May 12, 1882 following the attempted suicide of Edmund W. Kingsland, the bank's Treasurer, in his office. [5] The run on the bank ceased when an independent audit proved all accounts were in order. [6] Kingsland survived the suicide attempt. [7] In 1989, The Provident Savings Bank celebrated its 150th anniversary.
WSFS' growth continued in the 1950s and 60s, and was the first bank in the United States to issue debit cards in the late 1960s. By the 1980s, WSFS had expanded from northern New Castle County into Kent and Sussex counties, and went public in 1986 on the NASDAQ market.
The former Provident Bank branch at 15 Trinity St. Newton, is seen Sept. 12, 2024. Sussex County is buying the building to convert into the Board of Elections office.
